With the holidays just around the corner you may need some direction on how to protect your information from common schemes. Here are some quick tips to make sure you are not exposing your identity to fraud:
- Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet – there is no reason to physically carry your SSN card unless you need it to prove your identity with the proper authorities such as government entities or on your first day at a new job.
- Store tax documents in a secure location – keep tax documents in a secure location such as a locked filing cabinet or a safe; your garage or attic does not count as a secure location.
- Use a cross-cut shredder before disposing of any sensitive or financial information – this includes personal mail, banking statements, financial documents, and account information.
- Do not store passwords on paper or electronic documents – if you cannot remember all of your passwords, try using a reputable password management service.
