Is Your Password Enough to Protect?

Better protect your personal information with stronger passwords. Begin by creating passwords that will safeguard your online accounts, including ones that:

  • Are at least 8 characters long
  • Incorporate numbers and symbols
  • Cannot be found in the dictionary

Try using the first letter in every word of a phrase of at least eight words that has meaning to you.

For example, your phrase could be “Use strong passwords to keep identity thieves out” and your password would be the first letter of each word in that phrase or “Usptkito.” Be sure to go back and replace or add numbers, symbols, and uppercase and lowercase letters.  Your final password would be something like “U$p2kito.”

One of the most important security tips is to avoid reusing passwords across multiple accounts. Although this is hard to do (and remember) it is critical to your online security. If someone hacks into your email, they could also access any other accounts that share the same password.
